Reflections on a journey of learning

Sunday, May 1st, 2011

As a student at the University of Nairobi I always spent lots of time in solitude as I pondered the future and what I wanted it to look like for me. The more I did this, the more it became clearer to me that I wanted to live a better life than what I had seen and experienced up till that time in my life. I never at that time desired to leave my country and head for the West. I loved and still love my country but somehow as I began dreaming about a better life and developing my vision for life, it became imperative that I had to leave the country for a while.

Living and experiencing a better life does not have to mean that you leave your country. In some instances a change of location might be in order but it is more a matter of disposition than position. The idea of learning has been empowering for me and continues to alter my disposition. One has to change one’s outlook on life and elevate quality of thinking. My whole purpose in life now is to empower others with knowledge, skills, wisdom and resources that will enlighten, encourage, equip, embolden and enable them to embody the better life. My vision deep down is a world in which all people are fully empowered with all they need to live a better life.

April Fool’s Day Prank – A Poem

Sunday, April 1st, 2007

Great wit have they who succeed at pranking others,
They not only plan it with hindsight, foresight and insight;
But also with great vision and a sense of mission.

They jealously guard the prank and keep it a secret,
Knowing that the prank’s end is to liven up a life,
And the means to the end is the joke on the subject.

In being playful and malicious, the average pranker is mean,
By being practical and meaningful, the good pranker is caring,
For being purposeful and masterful, the great pranker is wise.

Therefore prank away ye April Fools Day zealots,
Let your antics inspire happiness to the mundane,
May this day provide lots of glee to those who fall for the pranks.

In honor of Black History Month

Wednesday, February 28th, 2007

Today being the last day of February, I thought it best to post some thoughts on what has been the key to the progress of the black community. The key to progress has been teh eradication of a key barrier that had been hidden to so many but was clearly revealed in a statement by United States senator Henry Barry, made in 1832, concerning Negro slaves. He said,

“We have, as far as possible, closed every avenue by which light may enter the slave’s mind. If we could completely extinguish the capacity to see light, our work would be complete. They would be on the same level with the beast of the field, and we would be safe.”

From this statement, it’s easy to see that light is the key to progress. In my second book, Quest for Light, I defined light and outlined key strategies in which we can embody more light in our lives.

In honor of Black history month, I will be offering Quest for Light for a discounted price of US $ 9.99 (plus shipping and handling) throughout the month of March 2007. In order to get this discount you will need to email me at Better Life. The email is herman(at)

Draft … YOU!!!

Tuesday, December 26th, 2006

Presidential politics have always been interesting. I think the thrill comes from the many dynamics of watching the race – personalities, philosophies, partnerships, passions, perspectives, promises, peculiarities, prejudices and people are all developed, exposed, shaped and redefined in so many different ways. As we prepare for a new year, some are preparing for a race for the White House that will be a very unique one. So many interesting dynamics come into the 2008 race for the White House – we have an African American that is rumored to be among the leading contenders, we have a woman in the mix, religion might be a huge factor since there’s a Mormon said to be weighing his possibilities and so many other factors.

The other day I received an email from my sister encouraging me to visit a website that’s been created to facilitate, promote and encourage senator Barrack Obama to run ( I like Senator Obama – not just because his heritage is from my birth country of Kenya – but because he is a sound leader. As a compelling public figure in America, I think he brings a lot of hope to many in the country. He is very thoughtful and has America at the center of his heart. While it is great to sign that petition and ‘draft’ Obama, there’s another draft that I’d like you to consider. How about Draft YOU!! I want you to consider drafting yourself into the greatest race of all time – the race to fulfill your potential and live your very best life!

As we enter into a new year, I want you to start paying more attention to making yourself the very best person you can be – 2007 is about being better! At the Better Life Company, we will focus on developing materials and products that will empower YOU with knowledge, skills, wisdom and resources that will enlighten, encourage, equip, embolden and enable YOU to embody the better life. We encourage you to focus on your own personal growth and development. Discover your true potential and unleash your maximum capabilities! Find what you were born to do and give it your very best shot.
